When we think of the clothing of the nineteen twenties the flapper fashion is the image that immediately comes to mind. Although it wasn’t actually around until the mid 1920s the style is synonymous with the spirit of the decade.

Bright young things
After the dark & dangerous times of World War I, the people of the 1920s wanted to create a new future & put the past behind them.  As suggested by the title of the movie set in the twenties starring Julie Andrews, Thoroughly Modern Millie, modernity was what was important.

People just wanted to forget about the hardship of the war years & get on with the serious business of having a good time.  Jazz clubs often stayed open all night & held dance marathons & young people experienced more freedom than ever before.  There was a new sense of optimism & young people in particular aspired to travel & own sports cars & experience what life had to offer.

For women in the 1920s there was a complete revolution.  They rejected the restrictions of  the long skirts & boned corsets of  Victorian costumes & began to embrace a simpler & more practical way of dressing.  This made modern trends much more accessible to the middle classes because the fashions of the 1920s costumes had simple lines & could be easily made at home. As women began to push the boundaries of what had been previosly expected of them they started to wear make up & some of them even wore trousers.  Styles became increasingly androgynous & for the first time gender roles began to be blurred.

In 1920 Prohibition legislation was introduced into the United States outlawing amongst other things the sale of alcohol.  Gangsters like Al Capone & Lucky Luciano saw an opportunity & began to run underground clubs where drinks were served.  These establishnents which often served food & put on elaborate entertainment became known as Speakeasies.
